Ottawa firefighters

made quick work of a fire Wednesday morning at a student residence building at St. Paul University.

It was the first call of 2026 for the Ottawa Fire Service.

Firefighters were alerted at 10:44 a.m. by a monitoring company reporting a fire at the residence at 150 Hazel St., near Clegg Street in the Old Ottawa East neighbourhood.

On the scene, they determined the alarm had been activated on the fourth floor and proceeded to the stairwell. En route, they were met by an occupant of Unit 409, who reported smoke and fire in the bathroom.

The team located an electrical fire in a bathroom light fixture that had spread into the surrounding walls.

The fire was contained to the bathroom area and was declared under control 15 minutes after crews arrived at the scene.

A search confirmed no other occupants were inside the unit. Ventilation fans were used to remove residual smoke.

There were no reported injuries, and building staff arranged alternate accommodations for the displaced student.
