One person is dead after they were struck by a cargo van on Industrial Avenue near the Ottawa Train Yards on Wednesday.
Ottawa paramedics said they arrived at the scene at about 9:30 a.m. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The victim was covered by a tarp in the right lane of westbound Industrial. Next to them was an overturned wheelchair, and two blue shoes with white soles were on the asphalt.
Police arrived shortly after 9:30 a.m at the scene. “Sadly, when the officer arrived, the individual in the wheelchair was pronounced deceased,” Ottawa police duty inspector Julie Mann said at the scene.
Paramedics’ spokesman Marc-Antoine Deschamps said no information on the victim is being released pending notification of next-of-kin.
The driver of the van spoke to the Citizen at the scene Wednesday, and said he was in shock over the incident. He said was not being charged at this time.
Seven police cars and an ambulance were on scene, and the area was cordoned off by yellow police tape. A white panel van was also parked at the scene.
Industrial Avenue was closed between Russell Road and Trainyards Drive, with the collision investigations unit on scene.
“Road closures will be in effect for a large part of the day here,” Mann said.
It was the second fatal collision involving a pedestrian in less than two days in the city.
