Spring has arrived at Bate Island, and with it, the Ottawa River’s legendary whitewater playground has roared to life.

As snowmelt swells the river, waves and standing waves form along the shoreline, drawing hardcore paddling enthusiasts from near and far.

Outfitted in neoprene, dry-suits, life jackets and helmets, these experienced surfers and kayakers embrace the chilly water and powerful current, carving and surfing with skill and style.

It’s not for the faint of heart. This is spring paddling at its most intense.
