The Ottawa Police Service is appealing to the public to help identify a “person of interest” in relation to a

fatal stabbing

near Ottawa Trainyards earlier this month.

Officers said the man, who was described as Black and about 19 to 21 years old and six feet one inches in height, is “known to frequent the Russell Heights neighbourhood.”

Police also released photos of the man they were hoping to identify.

On Saturday, Oct. 18, police said in a news release identified 21-year-old Raphael Atende as the victim of the fatal stabbing in the 1700 block of Russell Road.

The area, identified as Russell Heights, is an Ottawa Community Housing complex for low-income families.

Atende was stabbed just after midnight, according to the OPS release.

It was the 15th homicide in the city this year.

Anyone with information about the incident are asked to call OPS’ homicide unit at 613-236-1222 ext. 5493, or Crime Stoppers at

1-800-222-8477.

The stabbing happened almost a week after a shooting occurred in the area on Thanksgiving Day, but no injuries were reported in the previous episode.
