Durham Regional Police say a male has been pronounced dead after he was found with obvious signs of trauma near a mosque in Oshawa on Thursday.

Officers were called to the Simcoe Street South and McGrigor Street area for unknown trouble.

Once on scene they located a male with injuries. He was later pronounced dead. His age has not been revealed.

Investigators say the victim was found near the Oshawa Islamic Centre mosque, but so far they can’t say if there’s a connection to the place of worship.

“We are aware of the proximity of this incident to the nearby mosque,” Durham police said in a statement. “Determining whether there is any connection between the location and this tragic event will form part of the ongoing investigation.

“We understand that this incident has had a significant impact on members of the Muslim community and the broader public.”

Police have not revealed how the male was injured.

“Investigators continue to work diligently to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident. We remain in close contact with leaders from the Oshawa Islamic Centre and the broader community to ensure the investigation is conducted with sensitivity, respect, and transparency.”
