into the Ottawa River to save a woman in distress on July 27.

The man, a resident of Quyon, was located by divers from the Sûreté du Québec around 12:45 p.m. on July 29, according to a media release.

“The intensive search for the Pontiac resident who sank under the Ottawa River near Mohr Island on 27 July has finally paid off,” the release read in French. “It took one hour to get the victim to shore, where he was confirmed dead.”

The man was not wearing a life-jacket when he jumped off a pontoon to save the woman, MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais police said.

The currently known evidence and circumstances indicate the man’s death was accidental, the release said. A coroner’s inquest is planned to establish the cause of the drowning.

The victim’s identity has not been released.

Mohr Island is about 50 kilometres west of Ottawa.
