Alectra Utilities says power has been restored in both Markham and Richmond Hill after hours-long blackouts affected thousands of customers on Thursday night.

The Richmond Hill outage has been attributed to equipment failure, while the Markham outage was caused by trees coming into contact with power lines.

The outages came at an inopportune time with temperatures soaring into the mid 30s on Thursday.

Hydro One was also reporting numerous outages Thursday due to storm activity in areas around Georgian Bay.

“Crews are responding to outages as quickly and as safely as possible as thunderstorms move through parts of southern and central Ontario,” a statement on the Hydro One website said.

“Stay clear of any fallen power lines. If you spot a fallen line, keep at least 10 metres back, even if it does not appear to be live. Report it to 911 and call Hydro One at 1-800-434-1235.”
