The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has opened an investigation after the body of a man was recovered following a Saturday night house fire in Napanee.
Napanee firefighters were battling the fire on Switzer Road at about 9:30 p.m. when they were advised that people were potentially trapped. Provincial police from Lennox and Addington County were called in.
A 65-year-old man was one of three residents of the building.
One man, 59, jumped from a second-floor balcony to escape the smoke and flames. He was transported to hospital in critical condition.
The other man, 34, escaped without serious injury.
A post-mortem examination will be conducted to confirm the identity of remains found in the building.
Napanee is about 230 km west of Ottawa.
