The TTC says repairs to streetcar wires have been completed at the intersection of King Street West and Spadina Avenue after a garbage truck hit wires earlier this week, affecting surface route service in the area and closing the intersection.

“After working day and night for the past three days, TTC crews have completed extensive repairs at the intersection of King St. and Spadina Ave., which means it can reopen for streetcar service,” TTC CEO Greg Percy said in a statement posted on X just before 9:30 a.m. on Friday.

“This complex intersection has multiple intertwining cables and connectors supported by multiple poles. All of this infrastructure had first to be inspected to determine the extent of the damage. Once the inspection was complete, crews had to re-string the cables and restore power.”

The incident happened around 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Police said the live wires came down but no injuries were reported.

A TTC spokesperson said the garbage truck appeared to have its bucket up when it took out the overhead wires through the intersection

A full road closure was in place on Spadina between Front Street and Adelaide Street and on King Street between Charlotte Street and Brant Street. There were also streetcar diversions on several routes, including the 504 King, 508 Lake Shore, and 510 Spadina. Buses were also supplementing some service.

The TTC had said repairs to the streetcar wires and the overheard power network would be expected to last until the end of the week.

With the repairs now completed, the TTC said streetcar service on the 504 and 508 routes have resumed regular routing. However, the 510 Spadina route is still on diversion, for now.

“We’re advised the intersection remains closed to motor vehicles until the City de-ices the roadway. Once clear, 510 Spadina buses will return to regular routing,” the TTC said.

In his statement, Percy thanked TTC riders for their patience and also the workers who completed the repair work “quickly and safely.”
