A burst pipe that recently caused flooding at the Carleton Lodge long-term care home damaged 40 resident rooms and has forced the relocation of 26 residents.

The burst pipe and flooding incident happened during the afternoon of Dec. 27, according to a memo from Clara Freire, the City of Ottawa’s general manager of community and social services.

Carleton Lodge, one of four city-operated long-term care homes, is located at 55 Lodge Rd. in south Nepean between the Rideau River and Prince of Wales Drive.

Residents impacted by the flooding have been temporarily accommodated within Carleton Lodge, the memo said.

Ontario’s Ministry of Long-Term Care determined that impacted residents would be temporarily relocated to other long-term homes in the region, with 26 residents currently awaiting relocation.

There were no injuries to residents or staff, Freire said.

Officials with Ontario Health atHome are meeting with residents and families to identify appropriate bed matches and to co-ordinate transfers. The relocations will be temporary, Freire said, and “residents who wish to return to Carleton Lodge will be prioritized once repairs are complete.”

Staff at Carleton Lodge activated emergency protocols when the flooding occurred, contacted emergency services, removed residents from affected areas and informed key contacts, Freire said.

Ottawa Fire Services stopped the leak and contained the flooding, and staff from recreation, cultural and facility services and the Office of Emergency Management provided staff with ongoing support, the memo said.

Carleton Lodge increased staffing levels with contributions from other city-operated long-term care homes.

Staff have been working with contracted service providers to assess the damage to the resident rooms and common areas of the home, Freire said, and are working to establish a timeline for remediation and repairs.

Updates will be provided to residents and families throughout the process, the memo said.
