Romance novels are huge — so are their hulking leading men. Why are we still swooning over Fabio-like hunks?

If you were to gather all of the leading men from the biggest romance novels of the past few years into a room, you’d quickly notice a striking similarity among them.

Take Xaden Riorson of “Onyx Storm”— the third book in Rebecca Yarros’ romantasy series that began with Fourth Wing — which became the fastest-selling novel for adults in 20 years when it came out in January. Xaden, a moody dragon rider, is six foot four with a “massive chest, wide shoulders and heavily muscled arms,” no doubt from catching all those daggers his love interest Violet throws at him in the “I’m plotting your murder” stage of their enemies-to-lovers arc.
