Ottawa residents and visitors will be able to skate their way into the new year with a 3.4-kilometre stretch of the
Rideau Canal Skateway
set to open on New Year’s Eve.
Starting at 8 a.m. Wednesday, a section of the
skateway
from the Somerset Street West access point to the Bank Street Bridge will be open for skating, the National Capital Commission announced Tuesday afternoon.
“The cold weather in December provided ideal conditions for our operations. More sections of the Skateway should open as soon as ice conditions permit,” the NCC said in the announcement.
BeaverTail stands and rest areas will be open on Wednesday at the Fifth and Concord locations, the NCC said, with other vendors opening later in the week. Rentals will also be available at the Fifth Avenue access point.
The Bank Street stairs will not be open just yet, the NCC said on social media.
The Patterson Creek skating area will be closed for the whole skating season this year due to the rehabilitation of the Patterson Creek Bridge. A temporary staircase near Monkland Avenue has been added nearby.
“Stay off the ice until then! Our teams are
working hard to get the ice ready
,” the NCC said.
