As the dust settles from the federal election, Ottawa’s forecast calls for big swings in temperature and a spring thunderstorm.
Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch at noon on Tuesday. The agency warned of the possibility of wind gusts up to 110 km/h, hail as large as 4 cm and the risk of a tornado.
“Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts and large hail,” the agency said in its alert.
“A cold front moving through the area is expected to trigger severe thunderstorms this afternoon. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road.”
The agency forecast the mercury to peak at 23 C on April 29, with the humidity making it feel like 27. The temperature is expected to drop to about 2 C in the evening with a windchill of -9.
The weather agency also said there’s a 70 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms this afternoon as well as a risk of a thunderstorm the next morning.
