Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has opened an investigation into Ottawa police actions in the death of a person in Ottawa’s south end Friday.
“The SIU is investigating the death of a man following a collision in Ottawa last night,” SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette said in an email Saturday.
“As Ottawa police officers may have been in and around the area at the time of the man’s death, the SIU was notified and is investigating,” Denette said.
The incident occurred near Bank Street and Morningside Avenue near the Ottawa city limits.
“Investigators are being dispatched to the scene,” Denette said.
“The man has not yet been identified.”
The SIU is an independent agency that investigates incidents involving police officers resulting in death, serious injury, allegations of sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
The SIU director assesses determines whether there are reasonable grounds t o believe an officer committed a criminal offence. The director has the authority to charge the officer, who is then prosecuted by the Crown Attorney.
The SIU did not immediately respond to a request for further information in the case.
The incident occurred near Morningside Avenue, about 40 kilometres from downtown Ottawa.
Paramedics from Cornwall were assigned to the crash because they were nearest to the incident.
The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Ottawa police closed Bank Street from Morningside Avenue to Boyd Road to conduct the investigation.
