Driving students are taught from the beginning to stay out of the fast lanes unless you’re passing.
A pair of Toronto-area men found out why Wednesday when they were slapped with more than 30 charges after an alert OPP officer spotted them dawdling in the passing lanes on Highway 401 near Brockville.
Shortly after 4 p.m., the officer spotted an SUV with obscured windows travelling in the passing lane for an “extended period of time,” police said.
Once stopped, officers spotted “suspected drugs and stolen property” inside the SUV.
The men were immediately arrested. They face numerous charges, including theft of a vehicle and possession of break-in instruments. The driver also faces a charge of failing to keep right when driving at less than normal speed.
Among the items seized in the vehicle: contraband cigarettes, seven vehicle key fobs, a device typically associated with reprogramming vehicle key fobs, other items associated with vehicle break-ins, as well as cellphones and quantities of cannabis, suspected cocaine and plastic bags with suspected residue of methamphetamine.
Shane Persad, 38, of Etobicoke and Jagdeep Dhaliwal, 31, remain in custody pending a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brockville on Thursday.
