There were a few tense moments at
Ottawa International Airport
on Wednesday afternoon, when a small private aircraft slid off a runway due to landing gear problems.
The aircraft’s pilot declared an emergency before attempting to land on one of the airport’s runways, Krista Kealey, the airport’s vice-president of communications, said in a news release.
“Because one landing gear would not lock in place, the aircraft exited the runway, stopping in snow,” Kealey said.
Airport fire service personnel were at the scene quickly, although there was no fire.
Ottawa Fire Services
also responded to the call in support of the airport’s responders.

The personnel “attended to the aircraft’s single occupant with no injuries reported,” Kealey said.
The runway was to remain closed until the aircraft could be safely removed. The airport was otherwise operating normally.
