High snowpiles in the region came in handy in Smiths Falls earlier this week when a fugitive in a car fleeing police crashed into a snowbank.

Smiths Falls Police Service said in a release that an officer on “proactive patrol” Thursday spotted a driver known to be wanted by police.

The fugitive, 38, spotted the officer and took off “in a dangerous manner,” only to smash into a nearby snowbank.

The driver took off on foot, entering a nearby home.

“After brief discussions the driver exited the residence and surrendered to police,” police said.

The man was charged with a number of traffic offences, as well provincial driving charges.

In addition, he was charged with assaulting an officer with a weapon and other charges from a December incident.
