TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index fell in late-morning trading, weighed down by losses in the telecom and base metal sectors, while U.S. stock markets were mixed.
The S&P/TSX composite index was down 70.96 points at 21,777.63.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 251.30 points at 39,159.91. The S&P 500 index was up 16.86 points at 5,464.73, while the Nasdaq composite was up 190.21 points at 17,687.03.
The Canadian dollar traded for 73.24 cents US compared with 73.19 cents US on Monday.
The August crude oil contract was down six cents at US$81.57 per barrel and the August natural gas contract was down seven cents at US$2.88 per mmBTU.
The August gold contract was down US$6.50 at US$2,337.90 an ounce and the September copper contract was down four cents at US$4.39 a pound.
