TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index was down more than 400 points in late-morning trading, weighed down by losses in the base metal sector, while U.S. stock markets also posted losses.
The S&P/TSX composite index was down 405.38 points at 30,053.42.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 41.65 points at 45,910.59. The S&P 500 index was down 18.72 points at 6,610.35, while the Nasdaq composite was down 119.82 points at 22,442.72.
The Canadian dollar traded for 71.16 cents US compared with 71.18 cents US on Thursday.
The December crude oil contract was down two cents US at US$56.97 per barrel.
The December gold contract was down US$36.50 at US$4,268.10 an ounce.
