TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index fell nearly 300 points on broad-based weakness in late-morning trading, while U.S. stock markets were mixed.
The S&P/TSX composite index was down 289.54 points at 32,117.48.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 171.72 points at 49,290.36. The S&P 500 index was up 4.63 points at 6,949.45, while the Nasdaq composite was up 105.98 points at 23,653.15.
The Canadian dollar traded for 72.34 cents US compared with 72.52 cents US on Tuesday.
The February crude oil contract was down 73 cents US at US$56.40 per barrel.
The February gold contract was down US$39.50 at US$4,456.60 an ounce.
