TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index gained more than 100 points in late-morning trading helped by strength in commodity stocks as the prices of oil and gold climbed, while U.S. stock markets were mixed.
The S&P/TSX composite index was up 124.72 points at 33,127.42.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 249.76 points at 49,134.25. The S&P 500 index was up 13.30 points at 6,926.65, while the Nasdaq composite was up 137.87 points at 23,573.89.
The Canadian dollar traded for 72.77 cents US compared with 72.47 cents US on Thursday.
The March crude oil contract was up US$1.52 at US$60.88 per barrel.
The February gold contract was up US$61.60 at US$4,975.00 an ounce.
