TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index rose in late-morning trading, helped by strength in the telecommunication and base metal sectors, while U.S. stock markets also climbed.
The S&P/TSX composite index was up 82.23 points at 29,988.78.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 297.65 points at 46,049.91. The S&P 500 index was up 25.51 points at 6,564.27, while the Nasdaq composite was up 27.85 points at 22,105.90.
The Canadian dollar traded for 70.77 cents US compared with 71.02 cents US on Thursday.
The January crude oil contract was down US$1.39 at US$57.61 per barrel.
The December gold contract was up US$4.10 at US$4,064.10 an ounce.
