TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index was up more than 200 points in late-morning trading, helped by strength in base metal and technology stocks, while U.S. stock markets were mixed.
The S&P/TSX composite index was up 243.57 points at 33,721.28.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 129.13 points at 48,056.67. The S&P 500 index was up 14.75 points at 6,839.41, while the Nasdaq composite was up 173.70 points at 22,996.12.
The Canadian dollar traded for 72.33 cents US compared with 72.35 cents US on Thursday.
The May crude oil contract was up 90 cents US at US$98.77 per barrel.
The June gold contract was down US$21.00 at US$4,797.00 an ounce.
