TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index was up more than 300 points in late-morning trading, helped by strength in the base metal and technology sectors, while U.S. stock markets also rose.
The S&P/TSX composite index was up 311.98 points at 31,752.83.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 274.76 points at 48,226.61. The S&P 500 index was up 53.78 points at 6,828.54, while the Nasdaq composite was up 242.87 points at 23,249.23.
The Canadian dollar traded for 72.58 cents US compared with 72.60 cents US on Thursday.
The February crude oil contract was up 27 cents US at US$56.27 per barrel.
The February gold contract was up US$17.70 at US$4,382.20 an ounce.
