TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index gained more than 300 points in late-morning trading, helped by strength in the base metals sector, while U.S. stock markets also surged higher.
The S&P/TSX composite index was up 321.43 points at 30,429.91.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 376.10 points at 46,566.71. The S&P 500 index was up 67.13 points at 6,731.14, while the Nasdaq composite was up 311.97 points at 22,991.95.
The Canadian dollar traded for 71.27 cents US compared with 71.25 cents US on Friday.
The December crude oil contract was down 50 cents US at US$56.65 per barrel.
The December gold contract was up US$141.80 at US$4,355.10 an ounce.
