TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index was up nearly 300 points in late-morning trading, helped higher by strength in the base metal and energy sectors, while U.S. stock markets also climbed.
The S&P/TSX composite index was up 296.40 points at 32,052.17.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 278.99 points at 48,413.88. The S&P 500 index was up 43.46 points at 6,877.96, while the Nasdaq composite was up 149.11 points at 23,456.73.
The Canadian dollar traded for 72.78 cents US compared with 72.56 cents US on Friday.
The February crude oil contract was up US$1.14 at US$57.66 per barrel.
The February gold contract was up US$84.10 at US$4,471.40 an ounce.
