An 18-year-old man drowned in the Rideau River in Manotick on Monday night.
Emergency responders were called near River Road and Knott Crescent following reports of a “swimmer in distress.”
In a social media post on X, the Ottawa Fire Services (OFS)said they received a 9-1-1 call at 9:21 p.m., that reported three teenagers went out swimming near Walton Upton-Collins Park, but only two came out.
“Initial reports were that the third resident had been under the water for five minutes and not resurfaced,” the post read.
At 9:45 p.m., the OFS’ Water Rescue Team located the man under the water and “immediately initiated CPR.”
The man was pulled from the water by
Ottawa firefighters and paramedics, “initiated resuscitation and continued their efforts” while heading to the hospital, said Marc-Antoine Deschamps, superintendent of public information at Ottawa Paramedic Service.
“He was in critical, life-threatening condition at hospital,” Deschamps said.
Ottawa police said when the teenagers entered the water, the 18-year-old man began to struggle and went under. He was later pronounced deceased in the hospital.
“We are grateful to the nearby residents who stepped in to assist first responders during efforts to save the teen,” police said.
“Our thoughts are with the young man’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”
