WHERE CHEFS EAT
Where Chefs Eat is a weekly series that asks Toronto chefs and restaurant owners to name their favourite places to dine in the city: where they go for everything from weekend brunch to late-night cravings, fancy dinners to dessert.
This week: Dinesh Butola, chef at Pukka
Known for: Crafting approachable, classic Indian dishes with a focus on South Indian vegetarian fare using fresh, local produce.
Every corner in Toronto yields a new small independently run restaurant or intriguing take-out food spot, according to chef Dinesh Butola. He’s been especially vibing with all the sando shops popping. “Toronto has a robust burger and pizza scene, but the trend of sandwich concepts take quick eats to a whole new level.”)
Butola is the chef at Pukka, a St. Clair W. staple where he’s been since it opened 12 years ago, sizzling up classic Indian recipes that are approachable enough for Indian-food newbies and satisfying enough for regulars who return year after year. His current obsession? Crafting South Indian vegetarian dishes using a bounty of summertime local produce.
But when he’s looking to score a great meal elsewhere, these are the mouth-watering stops he hits for world-class food and drinks.
Best date-night spot
Tabule, various locations
Tabule
“The place is always hopping, with a lively crowd and a menu that never disappoints. Must-haves: fried eggplant, baba ghanouj, and kefta kebabs. It’s a great spot for sharing plates and trying a bit of everything.”
Best bakery
Baker and Scone, 693 St Clair Ave. W.

“Get the salted caramel scone; the best time to go is in the morning when the scones are still warm. Smother one with butter and you’re set. The bakery has a steady stream of regulars who know to show up early for the freshest batch. The aroma of fresh-baked scones fills the shop, and there’s always a tempting display of other treats if you’re in the mood to try something new.”
The last best thing you ate
Phở Hưng, various locations
pho
“Most people think pho is all about the beef broth, but the chicken version here is just as satisfying.”
Hidden gem
Curryish Tavern, 783 Queen St. W.
curryish
“The space has a rustic, old-local-pub feel, but the food is upscale gastro-Indian. My go-to is the duck confit served in a foie gras curry; a dish that’s both unexpected and memorable.”
Repeat reservation
Chubby’s Jamaican Kitchen, 104 Portland St.

“It’s always fun to eat at this cool restaurant, with breezy summer R&B vibes in the air. Menu highlights include the goat curry and oxtail stew, both packed with flavour and perfect for sharing. It’s the kind of place where you can linger over dinner with friends, and the playlist always sets the right mood.”
Current obsession
Jumbo Lobster Restaurant, 9019 Leslie St.
jumbo
“This place is completely over the top, plastic tablecloths and all. It’s a must for a group dinner, especially if you don’t mind getting your hands dirty. The portions are generous, and the experience is half the fun.”
Comfort food
Sea Witch Fish & Chips, 636 St Clair Ave. W.

“Best to drop by and grab a pew: literally, there are church pews for seating. The fish is crispy, the chips are hot, and it’s a no-fuss meal that always hits the spot.”
Best dessert
Scaramouche, 1 Benvenuto Pl.

“Forget the birthday cake, I’d rather have a whole coconut cream pie for myself. The coconut cream filling is light and not too sweet, with a flaky crust that’s hard to beat.”
Lunch spot
Gerry’s Fast Foods, 724 St Clair Ave. W.
gerry
“Jerk chicken, rice and peas, coleslaw. It’s a simple combo, but so satisfying. The portions are generous, and the food is always fresh.”
Best late-night craving spot
Zimidar Bar & Grill, various locations

“When I’m feeling homesick, this place lifts me up. The menu has all the classics, and the kitchen stays open late.”
Best takeout
Maker Pizza, various locations

“No doubt this is pizza with a price tag, but the Napoli Dynamite is the bomb. The crust is chewy, the toppings are generous, and it’s always delivered hot.”
Favourite weekend breakfast place
Glass Kitchen, 505 Hwy 7 Unit 98 & 99

“Sunday morning treat: fried chicken and waffles drizzled with chili maple syrup. It’s the kind of breakfast that makes you want to linger over coffee.”
