The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) will celebrate its 50th edition with a series of high-profile premieres, including Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of “Frankenstein,” which was largely shot in Toronto in 2024.
The festival will also feature world premieres of Aziz Ansari’s “Good Fortune” — starring Keanu Reeves, Seth Rogen and Sandra Oh — Rian Johnson’s third “Knives Out” film, James Vanderbilt’s “Nuremberg” and Annemarie Jacir’s “Palestine 36.”
It will also feature films directed by Baz Luhrmann, Benny Safdie, Maude Apatow and first-time director Scarlett Johansson.
Organizers also announced that the festival’s Closing Night Gala will be headlined by Canadian director Anne Émond’s “Peak Everything.”
The long list of films comes just under a month after TIFF announced that it will be featuring debuts from Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh (“The Christophers”), Spanish director Alejandro Amenábar (“The Captive”), South Korean director Sung-hyun Byun (“Good News”), American director Nia DaCosta (“Hedda”) and Canada’s own Chandler Levack (“Mile End Kicks”).
Presented for the second year by Rogers, TIFF is set to take place between Sept. 4 and 14. Earlier this month, the festival announced that it will open with a documentary about the Canadian comedy legend John Candy. Directed by Colin Hanks and produced by Ryan Reynolds, “John Candy: I Like Me” traces the comedy star’s personal and professional life with never-before-seen home videos and candid recollections that reveal a son, husband, father and friend who battled personal ghosts and Hollywood pressures.
TIFF’s full schedule will be released Aug. 12. Tickets for TIFF members will go on sale beginning Aug. 15.
