Huge voter queues suggest high turnout

Voting at the first day of advance poll for Carleton riding: There were huge crowds and dedicated volunteers helping us to properly fold the extra-long ballots. It looks like this is going to be an election for the books; I predict amazing turnout.

Politics of fear still driving the Liberals

Re: Who won the English-language leaders’ debate? April 17.

It’s not surprising that Mark Carney continues to use fear to try to get votes. This just goes to show that nothing has changed in the Liberal party.

Here’s the right job for Conservatives

After careful thought based on what I heard in the debates last week, and recognizing how important it is for the official opposition to hold a government to account by holding its feet to the fire, I have decided that Canada’s interests will be best served by the Conservative Party in the role of His Majesty’s Official Opposition.

Identify the causes of steep housing prices

I would have a bit more respect for our political leaders if at least one of them had admitted in the debates that the considerable increase in immigration during the last few years had some impact on housing affordability. Unwillingness to recognize all the causes of a problem makes it difficult to solve it.

Shouldn’t they have booted the Bloc?

Re: Green Party booted from leaders’ debates due to lack of candidates, April 16.

Based on the criteria of the Leaders’ Debates Commission, it seems to me the first party that should have been disqualified was the Bloc Québécois. It certainly does not meet the stated criteria of endorsing candidates in at least 90 per cent of federal ridings (309 ridings out of 343).

The Bloc is a provincial party that calls itself a federal party. Since it does not even meet the criteria to participate in the debate, it seems to me it doesn’t meet the criteria to be a federal party.

The commission didn’t have a problem disqualifying the Greens; I wonder if it will step up and disqualify the Bloc next time?

Let’s catch up on our car industry

The London car show is now underway. Many Chinese electric vehicles are being showcased and, given the move to electrification, prices and the American tariffs, it is only a matter of time until Chinese EVs become dominant worldwide.

Canada should jump on the bandwagon. Our car industry is under foreign control and on its way to being dead. We need to welcome new manufacturers who will build cars for a worldwide market here. Putting tariffs on Chinese vehicles was necessary to keep in step with the U.S. a few months ago as a loyal friend, but now that the U.S. aim is to repatriate all auto production, what do we have to lose?
