Toronto homeowners are being given more incentive to cash in on the FIFA World Cup‘s arrival this summer.
Airbnb is offering a cash reward of $1,015 for first-time users of the short-term rental platform who host their first guest by July 31.
“We all know the cost of living is increasing, so this could be a big moment in terms of Canadians and Torontonians being able to earn some extra income,” said Matt McNama, spokesperson for Airbnb.
The only requirements are to be a first-time Airbnb host and to rent your entire home. The offer applies to 16 World Cup host cities across North America, including Vancouver, New York and Boston.
According to the City of Toronto, the World Cup is expected to bring in more than 300,000 visitors from out of town.
McNama said that the company is seeing a surge in searches for Airbnb’s in all host cities, and are hoping this incentive will help “meet that demand” by offering accommodations across the GTA.
“Whether you’re hosting in Liberty Village or in Scarborough, you would still be able to get this incentive,” said McNama.
Those visiting Toronto during the World Cup, which runs from June 11 to July 19, can already expect to be paying extra to stay after city council approved a tax hike for hotels and short-term rental companies like Airbnb.
Currently, there are 7,245 registered short-term rentals in Toronto.
McNama says that 85 per cent of available listings in Toronto during the World Cup are under $500.
“The more accommodations you have, the more affordable accommodations are going to be,” said McNama.
Toronto will host the Canadian men’s team’s first World Cup match on June 12 at Toronto Stadium (BMO Field has been renamed for this event) against the winner of the UEFA Path A playoff between Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy, Northern Ireland and Wales.
Toronto Stadium will also host group play matches between Ghana and Panama on June 17, Germany and Cote d’Ivoire on June 20, Croatia and Panama on June 23 and Senegal and a to-be-determined opponent on June 26. One knockout stage game will be held in Toronto in the Round of 32 on July 2.
Canada will play its other group stage matches in Vancouver on June 18 against Qatar and on June 24 against Switzerland.
