The fourth annual Michelin Guide to Toronto and its surrounding areas was announced Thursday night at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex in Exhibition Place. Every year, the internationally recognized dining guide rewards what its anonymous fleet of critics deems their favourites when it comes to dining and service.
For the past three years in a row, Yorkville’s high-end omakase restaurant Sushi Masaki Saito was the most decorated restaurant in the Toronto guide with two stars (the most a restaurant can earn is three). This year, the restaurant received one.
“I’ve been very busy this year. Every year is going to be different,” says owner and chef Masaki Saito when asked about how he felt about losing a Michelin star. “It’s OK. Check back with me in 2026.” Earlier this month, a documentary on Saito’s life and culinary talent, ”Still Single,” had its world premiere at TIFF.
Instead, another restaurant received the night’s top honours. Restaurant Pearl Morissette in Jordan Station, Ont., which also received top billing on this year’s Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants list, was the only restaurant to receive two stars this year. The Niagara region 42-acre farm, winery, restaurant and bakery won over critics for their seasonal menus and reliance on local ingredients, much of it grown on its property.
“We’re pleasantly surprised,” said Daniel Hadida, who co-owns Restaurant Pearl Morissette with Eric Robertson. “You do the work and make people happy. The rest is extra. I feel excited that a business like ours, that focuses on provenance in Canada, is being recognized. The support and growth of the team at the restaurant is the primary reason for our success. Both of us are here tonight, but the restaurant is still open and the team is working their butts off.”
This year’s list had one new restaurant that earned one Michelin star, Akin, in which its chef Eric Chong also won an award for best Young Chef, as well as a mention on Michelin’s Recommended list for his other restaurant, R&D.
The Bib Gourmand award, a distinction for restaurants that the Michelin Guide deemed to be a more affordable option, has six new entries this year: 7 Enoteca in Oakville; Barrel Heart Brewing in Dundas, Ont.; Mhel in Bloorcourt; Ricky + Olivia in Leslieville; Sundays in Uxbridge and The Cottage Cheese in Kensington Market.
The Michelin Guide’s Recommended list also has six new entries: Arbequina on the Roncesvalles strip; Linny’s on the Ossington strip; LSL in North York; Odd Duck in Kitchener; Okeya Kyujiro Toronto in Yorkville; and Bisteccheria Sammarco in Old Toronto.
