A man being sought on a number of offences and a teenage stunt driver were among dozens of tickets at what police call “a large unauthorized organized car meet” in the city’s west end Friday night.
Ottawa police traffic escort officers and patrol officers deployed in the Kanata area as part of an operation called #ResidentsMatter.
At the intersection of Hwy 417 and Palladium Drive, an automated licence plate recognition device alerted officers that a 21-year-old man was “a wanted person” for failure to appear in court in 2024 on charges including dangerous operation of motor vehicle, flight from police and “obstruct peace officer.
Officers served the driver with the warrant.
Dozens of tickets were issued on provincial offences such as speeding, unnecessary noise and illegal tints obscuring licence plates.
At Highway 416 and West Hunt Club Road, a 17-year-old driver on a G2 licence was charged with stunt-driving at 156 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. He was driving “his friend’s father’s car.”
Another 17-year-old was charged with a number of offences at Campeau Drive and Journeyman Street.
For stunt driving, each driver had their driver’s licence immediately suspended for 30 days, and the vehicle towed/impounded for 14 days. Each driver is required to attend court where, upon conviction, a fine of $2,000 to $10,000, and a further one- to three-year licence suspension, and six demerit points, with a possibility of six months in jail.
“Ottawa Police, along with OPP, will continue to monitor these car gatherings and will have a zero-tolerance approach to any illegal activity,” advises Const. Phil Kane of the Ottawa Police traffic escort and enforcement unit.
