Users of AI chatbots like ChatGPT are turning them into friends and romantic partners. The connection to ChatGPT has become so strong that when a new version of it came out, some people said they felt like the bot’s “personality” has changed and they lost a friend or a partner. 

Today on Commotion, host Elamin Abdelmahmoud speaks with New York Times technology reporter Kashmir Hill, who wrote a piece about a woman who fell in love with ChatGPT. They discuss how AI can mimic real connection and why so many people are turning to technology for companionship.
