“There’s no other place I’d rather live than Toronto,” says photographer Christopher Wahl. An icon of the industry who’s lensed the likes of Queen Elizabeth, Neil Young, David Suzuki and Barack Obama, Wahl relishes the distinct character of each neighbourhood and the sense of community and compassion across them.
Inspired by this collective generosity and the care his family is currently experiencing through the University Health Network for his daughter’s lifelong health condition, Wahl is releasing a portrait series highlighting the many faces of philanthropy and their incredible impact on how we’re able to look after one another. “I hope to show that everyone, no matter the size of their donation, can play a vital role in advancing health care in our city,” he says. “The world is a beautiful place — let’s all take care of each other.”
The half-shell haven
Rodney’s Oyster House, 469 King St. W.
“I’m an oyster snob. I love ’em and kinda won’t eat them anywhere but at Rodney’s Oyster House on King Street. East coast oysters are my favourite, but I’ll try any of them. It’s one of my favourite restaurants in the world. The staff is the coolest and the kitchen menu is always a treat.”
The sport spot
Mayfair Clubs, 801 Lake Shore Blvd. E.
“I play tennis at Mayfair on Lakeshore at least three times a week all year long, even in the winter — it’s my thing and I really enjoy it. The courts are awesome but hard to book, so don’t tell anyone! I dig my community of tennis peeps there and always look forward to going.”
The evening walk
University of Toronto, 27 King’s College Cir.
“I always love a walk to end a day. I’ll head to the main University of Toronto campus near College and Spadina when all the students are gone. It’s calm and quiet and feels like my backyard with such great architecture. It’s the perfect way to wind down and such a treat to have so much green space right in the middle of the city.”
The new favourite dinner destination
Martine’s Wine Bar, 293 Palmerston Ave.
“Martine’s Wine Bar just off College has a great atmosphere and is close to home, perfect for a cosy night out. The chicken is insane — it’s the best thing on the menu, and I get it every time. And the wine selection by the glass? World class. There’s always something new to try, and the staff know their stuff. I always appreciate their recommendations. Now that we’re talking about it, I might have to go back.”
The Saturday night outing
Scotiabank Arena, 40 Bay St.
“On a Saturday night, it’s gotta be a Leafs game with my son — we’re happy the season is in full swing. I’m a Torontonian, so obviously they’re my team. My son plays hockey and he loves them, too. We always have a blast watching them play. And you know what they say, maybe this year is their year. Go Leafs go!”
The classic cocktail bar
Bar Raval, 505 College St.
“For cocktails, it’s Bar Raval, hands down. My go-to beverage is a gin martini, because how can you beat it? It’s a classic for a reason. It’s another spot with great energy, and sitting on the patio is perfect for people watching. I always back up the martini with a little hamburguesa and the olives. So great.”
The to-go breakfast
Almond Butterfly Bakeshop & Café, 100 Harbord St.
“I’m a late eater, so breakfast consists of a smoothie on Harbord at Almond Butterfly. I can’t pick a favourite, they’re all good! But I usually try to get something with greens. The folks there are really nice, service is quick and you can always back up the smoothie with a cookie or little treat.”
