Despite frigid temperatures and flurries in downtown Ottawa on Saturday morning, hardy partiers turned up en masse Saturday for the first day of Winterlude in Confederation Park.

Kids in snowsuits and adults bundled up in puffy winter jackets lined the paths of the park, looking at the ice sculptures, grabbing bites at the BeaverTails truck or participating in the various events. Some even brought their dogs, dressed up in vests and boots.

The ice sculptures area, with ice chips flying from the artists’ tools, was a popular spot for selfies and family photos. Several of the participants appeared to be enjoying their first winter in Canada.

In one corner of the park, adults and kids alike participated in snow fitness, activities designed to keep their bodies moving and warm. Groups competed to see who could hold plank positions in the snow the longest and later moved on to a friendly game of tug-of-war.

In the Crystal Garden, 30 artists chipped away at ice blocks to create stunning sculptures celebrating Northern Canada. They will have 30 hours to transform 18 blocks of ice into stunning displays. Some artists, like Ross and Antonio Baisas, were no strangers to Winterlude.

Sunday’s forecast looks like a sunny, but chilly day in the area. The high is expected to be -11 C, with winds up to 15 km/h. Forecasters caution of the risk of frostbite to uncovered skin.
