A 29-year-old woman is dead after being struck by a vehicle in Brampton.

Police in Peel Region say the woman was crossing at the intersection of Queen Street West and McLaughlin Road just before 6 p.m. Thursday when a cube van travelling eastbound on Queen Street made a right turn onto McLaughlin and struck the woman.

Investigators say the woman suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Police say the driver of the truck continued on after striking the woman before they were stopped a short distance away by officers who were in the area.

“I don’t have a specific answer as to why the driver did not stop immediately following the collision. It’s quite possible, given the size of the cube van and dimensions of the vehicle, that perhaps the driver didn’t realize they may have struck a pedestrian,” said Cst. Taylor Halfyard, who added that the driver was cooperating with police.

There was no immediate word on whether any charges would be laid.
