1 constable-in-training killed, another critically injured, after crash near Ontario Police College

The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) says one constable in training (CIT) was killed and another was critically injured in a crash involving a transport truck near the Ontario Police College in the Township of Malahide on Tuesday morning.

DRPS said the recruits were travelling to a police training session at the time of the incident.

Elgin OPP said both recruits were in a sedan that was involved in a collision with a transport truck at around 11:19 a.m. at the intersection of College Line and Imperial Road.

One was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

Their identities have not been released.

The OPP said the driver of the transport truck was uninjured.

OPP are investigating the circumstances of the crash.

“During this difficult time, our focus is on supporting the families of our CIT’s, as well as their classmates, instructors, friends, and members of our Service who are grieving this tragic loss. We will continue to ensure they receive the care and support they need,’ read DRPS’s statement on the incident.

The Durham Police Service Board also released a statement, expressing their sympathies to the family, friends and collegues of the constable-in-training who died.

“Along with all members of the DRPS family, we mourn this devastating loss with a profound sense of sorrow,” read the statement. “We know that in this moment of tragedy, Chief Moreira, his leadership team, representatives of the Durham Regional Police Association and all DRPS members will unite to support one another with compassion, love, and respect.”

Premier Doug Ford also extended his condolences to the loved ones of the recruit.

“My thoughts are also with the recruit who remains in critical condition, as well as their family and the entire Durham Regional Police Service at this unimaginably difficult time,” read his statement.
