A section of Highway 401 in Clarington remains closed after a loose tire came off a vehicle and struck an SUV.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were called to a stretch of the highway near Newtonville Road just after 11:30 a.m. on Monday.

Police say a vehicle was travelling east when it lost one of its tires and wheel assembly that then crossed into the westbound lanes, hitting another vehicle.

The driver and passenger, both 70 years old, in the westbound vehicle were taken to hospital. OPP say the female passenger was airlifted to a trauma centre with serious but non-life-threatening injuries while the male driver has minor injuries.

Police say the driver of the vehicle travelling eastbound has been charged with a detached part from his vehicle.

The eastbound and westbound lanes of the 401 between Mill Street and Newtonville Road are closed for the collision investigation and clean-up.
