Four pedestrians, including two children under the age of 10, were injured in a crash in Richmond Hill on Thursday afternoon.

York regional police say the crash happened at the intersection of Major Mackenzie Drive and Newkirk Road around 3:15 p.m.

One woman was taken to a trauma centre with life-threatening injuries while another woman and two children, aged 7 and 1, were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. They have since been released.

“The adult female that is in life-threatening condition was wearing a reflective vest,” explained Insp. Rich Gaudet. “With respect to her employment as a crossing guard, we have not been able to confirm that yet. Based on our observations and based on statements we’ve received from witnesses, we have contacted the Ministry of Labour to attend to determine if she was actually here in her capacity as a crossing guard.”

Police say the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Gaudet said it was too early to say if the fading light played a role in the crash.

“It was essentially the vehicle that hit the four pedestrians, but as to why that vehicle hit the four pedestrians, that’s going to form part of our investigation,” he said.
