TORONTO – The operator of Eddie Bauer’s Canadian stores says it has filed for bankruptcy protection in the U.S. and will soon make a similar filing in Canada.
Eddie Bauer LLC says the 220 stores across both countries will remain open, but host liquidation sales as the court processes get underway and the business seeks a potential buyer.
If the retailer can’t find someone to purchase the business, its owner Catalyst Brands says it will begin a wind down of its Canadian and U.S. operations.
Eddie Bauer’s website shows it has 31 stores in Canada with about half in Ontario. Some started marking down inventory by at least 60 per cent last week.
In U.S. court documents, the company says a court proceeding it will soon launch in Canada will aim to protect Eddie Bauer’s assets in the country and ensure any sale agreement will be enforceable on both sides of the border.
It says its e-commerce and wholesale operations are not impacted by the filings because they are owned by Authentic Brands Group subsidiary Outdoor 5, which can keep licensing the Eddie Bauer name to manufacturers.
