GATINEAU – The Competition Bureau has reached an agreement with Chartwell Master Care LP regarding its plan to buy six retirement homes from Sifton Properties Ltd. in Ontario.
Under the deal, the regulator says Chartwell has agreed to sell its Clair Hills retirement home in Waterloo, Ont., to address competition concerns about the transaction.
The sale will be made to an independent purchaser to be approved by the commissioner of competition.
Chartwell Retirement Residences announced in July 2025 that it would buy six retirement communities across London, Waterloo and Mississauga, Ont., for $432 million.
The bureau says a review concluded the transaction would likely result in a substantial lessening of competition in the Kitchener-Waterloo region.
It says competition in the retirement home sector plays a crucial role in keeping prices in check.
