Watchdog investigating Ottawa police arrest of teen in Lowertown

Ontario’s civilian police oversight agency says it’s investigating the circumstances of the arrest of a male youth in Ottawa on Monday, March 30.

An online notification by the

Special Investigations Unit

said

Ottawa Police Service

officers were patrolling in the ByWard Market at about 12:30 p.m. that day when they observed a male youth who was wanted for several offences.

When the officers approached the youth, he attempted to flee on foot with the officers in pursuit. Near the intersection of York Street and Beausoleil Drive in the Lowertown neighbourhood, the youth was arrested following an altercation with the officers.

He was subsequently taken to hospital and diagnosed with a serious injury, according to the SIU announcement.

The SIU said it urged anyone who may have witnessed the arrest in the York Street/Beausoleil Drive area on March 30 — or who may have related closed-circuit TV or dashcam video — to contact its lead investigator either by telephone at 1-800-787-8529 or online at siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.

No other details of the youth or their injury were immediately available.
