Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend got kickstarted by the purest among us.

From ages five to 12, participants in the Ottawa Kids Marathon marked the beginning of the 52nd year of the iconic spring running festival on Saturday.

Some runners held hands as they made their journey to the finish line. Others high-fived the team mascots present at the race. Through it all, the weather co-operated, too.

The event was at full capacity, with about 1,900 kids signed up to run or walk the 1.2-kilometre distance.

On the sidelines, parents, friends and other supporters cheered, smiling ear to ear.

“You’re not even sweating … How did you do it?” one voice asked at the finish line.

Other events on Saturday included two-, five- and 10-kilometre races, while Sunday’s highlights include the Ottawa International Marathon and Half-Marathon.
