TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index was up more than 150 points in late-morning trading, helped by strength in the base metals sector, while U.S. stock markets also moved higher.
The moves on the market came as trade talks between Canada and the U.S. face a midnight deadline tonight when a new round of U.S. tariffs are set to take effect if a deal is not reached.
The S&P/TSX composite index was up 174.99 points at 36,540.41.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 403.79 points at 53,163.00. The S&P 500 index was up 36.77 points at 7,677.93, while the Nasdaq composite was up 104.79 points at 26,171.96.
The Canadian dollar traded for 72.62 cents US compared with 72.54 cents US on Thursday.
The October crude oil contract was down nine cents US at US$86.74 per barrel, while the December gold contract was up US$82.20 at US$4,653.60 an ounce.
