Here’s how to cast a special advance ballot in Ottawa’s municipal election

Voters now have their first chance to cast a ballot in Ottawa’s municipal election.

Special advance voting days will take place from Oct. 1 to Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with voters able to cast their ballot at any of the 10 locations across the city, regardless of their qualifying address.

Ottawa voters will have the chance to elect the next mayor, ward councillors and school board trustees.

Where can I participate in special advance voting?

What do I need to bring?

Voters are required to present a piece of identification that shows their name and Ottawa address. Photo identification is not required.

Identification examples include but are not limited to: an Ontario driver’s licence, an Ontario health card, an Ontario photo card, a cancelled personalized cheque, a rental agreement relating to property in Ontario or an insurance policy. All other accepted forms of identification can be found on the city’s website .

Voter notification letters and Canadian passports cannot be used as a piece of identification.

City election officials are encouraging voters to bring a voter notification letter if they’ve received one in the mail, though it is not required for voting.

What if I don’t vote this week?

Those who do not vote in special advance voting will still have other opportunities to cast their ballots.

The city will host an advance voting day on Oct. 16, and you can also cast your ballot on election day on Oct. 26.

On advance voting day and election day, voters can cast their ballots at the location assigned to them within their ward. Those locations can be found on the mailed voter notification letter and also on the city’s website .

For those whose applications were approved to vote by mail, special ballot kits must be received by Oct. 16 at 8 p.m., otherwise the vote will not be counted.
