Cole Escola’s award-winning comedy, “Oh, Mary!” is on its way to a Toronto theatre.
A limited engagement of the Tony and Olivier Award-winning play will run at the Royal Alexandra Theatre during the 2027-28 off-Mirvish season, the production company announced in a Monday press release. Dates, casting and ticket information have not been announced yet.
The Toronto run is part of the North American tour’s return for a second year in fall 2027. The current touring cast includes “RuPaul’s Drag Race” alum Alaska Thunderfuck and Tony Award winner J. Harrison Ghee. Alaska is playing Mary Todd Lincoln through January 2027, while Ghee plays Mary’s Husband before taking over the title role.
Written and originally performed by Escola, “Oh, Mary!” is a dark comedy about the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination from the perspective of his suffocated and erratic wife, Mary Todd Lincoln. The show explores the question, “What if Lincoln’s assassination wasn’t such a terrible thing for Mary?” After all, in the show, Mary is portrayed as a wannabe cabaret star.
A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the show took home two Tony Awards, including Best Direction of a Play for Sam Pinkleton, as well as Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for Cole Escola, making Escola the first non-binary actor to win in the category.
Well-known comedians have since starred in the titular role, including Emmy Award nominee Tituss Burgess and winner Maya Rudolph. “Saturday Night Live” alum Bowen Yang currently stars in the role on Broadway.
