Driver, 29, faces impaired charges after stop in construction zone

A 29-year-old Ottawa man faces a list of charges including impaired driving and stunt driving following a traffic stop by provincial police on the Queensway early Thursday.

Police said a speed enforcement operation was underway at about 1:30 a.m. on Hwy 417 near Maitland Avenue, where the speed limit has been reduced to 80 km/h due to construction.

Officers stopped a driver for travelling at 143 km/h. Officers suspected the driver to be under the influence of alcohol and a roadside breath test was administered.

The driver was brought to the Ottawa detachment, where he registered more than twice the legal alcohol limit.

Dan Ruremesha was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired, alcohol and drugs;
  • Operation while impaired, blood alcohol concentration 80 plus;
  • Dangerous Operation;
  • Drive motor vehicle — perform stunt;
  • And speeding.

Police said the driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days for the impaired charges and 30 days for the stunt driving and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days on the stunt-driving charges.

The accused is to appear in at the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date.

Police said a second driver was also stopped for stunt-driving in the construction zone. The driver had his licence suspended for 90 days and their vehicle was impounded for 14 days.
