As the trade war between Canada and the United States ramped up Tuesday, American late night talk show hosts got their digs in at U.S. President Donald Trump.
Jimmy Kimmel, returning from a summer hiatus, poked fun at Trump’s claim that Canada is “one of the worst countries in the world to deal with,” adding, “you know they’re very difficult people the Canadians. Michael J. Fox, an absolute monster. Don’t even get me started on Martin Short.”
He also criticized the American president’s renaming of Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” before pointing to a recent social media post where Trump suggested that he rename the U.S. state New Mexico to “New America.”
Kimmel joked that, “if there was a New America, we’d all go there immediately.”
“The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart, returning from a five-week vacation, summed up Trump’s summer in his opening monologue.
In an attack on the president’s renaming spree, Stewart said, “you don’t settle complicated international agreements by writing a new name on the map… why would we be trolling them? Is that the plan? To troll them into submission.”
Jimmy Fallon, host of “The Tonight Show,” jokingly suggested that Trump go on a renaming spree, including changing North Carolina and South Carolina to North America and South America respectively.
It comes as tensions in the trade war rose even higher on Tuesday, as Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on various exports — from dairy products to steel — took effect.
The Trump administration responded late Tuesday by banning the import of Canadian alcohol products and some dairy items.
