An Oribe-brand shampoo sold at Sephora and online to customers in Canada is facing a recall after the detection of possibly harmful bacteria.
The “Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo” in the 8.5 and 33.8 ounce sizes are affected, according to the shampoo’s manufacturer Kao USA, which voluntarily recalled the product on June 30. The affected lot was manufactured between Feb. 21 and Feb. 26 of this year, and has one of three lot codes printed on the bottom of the bottle: YR010556, YR010566, YR010576.
Kao USA said it had detected Pluralibacter gergoviae bacteria in its product, resulting in their recall decision.
“Though Pluralibacter gergoviae bacteria pose little medical risk to healthy people, those with certain health issues such as weakened immune systems may be more susceptible to infection by the bacteria,” the company said.
“Regardless of health status, Kao USA is urging anyone who has affected products as specified below to discontinue use.”
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) amplified the recall in the United States, where the product is also being called back. As of Tuesday, no recall notice has been published by the government of Canada on their website, though Kao USA said Canadian customers may be affected, too.
Kao USA said it is continuing to investigate the scope of the issue, working with the FDA and manufacturers to “prevent similar issues in the future.”
The recalled shampoo has a retail price of $67 Canadian.
Oribe, named after and co-founded by celebrity hairstylist Oribe Canales, who had worked with household names like Gianni Versace and Sarah Jessica Parker, was formed to create products “grounded in traditional hairstyling and blended with leading technology and the finest ingredients,” according to the company’s website.
